Under the influence of Bacchus, Chateauneuf-du-Pape seems nestled on a hill in the heart of Vaucluse.
At the top stand the few remains of the castle built by the popes in the 14th century. It was their summer residence to escape the summer heat of Avignon. And, it is also to the popes that we owe the first establishment of vines in the town. Ransacked and partially destroyed during the wars of religion, the castle was almost completely destroyed by the Germans in 1944.
But the greatest treasure that Chateauneuf-du-Pape contains are its cellars for you to discover and taste its white and red wines with such a generous character.
It is therefore there, in this town which cultivates the French way of life so well, and with a past steeped in history and culture, that Mathias Mansis – a local child – chose to set up his cellar.
Passionate about wine, the young man naturally turned to oenology studies, then completed his career with studies in the wine and spirits business. With diplomas in hand, he worked as a sommelier in various establishments in Courchevel before deciding to strike out on his own.
The selection offered at “La Cave de Mathias” is extremely rigorous with a panel allowing buyers to have a real insight into what the “Chateauneuf-du-Pape” appellation really is.

But Mathias' passion does not stop at wine, art - and more particularly contemporary art - is one of his centers of interest.
For him, talking about art and wine is almost obvious, and it would even be fair to talk about the association of beauty and the sacred. The two have a lot in common. Like each artist creating a work, each producer brings his personal touch to his wine, thus giving it its particularity. Moreover, since the dawn of time, wine has been celebrated by the greatest painters. So, how not to draw a parallel between the pleasure that comes from tasting a good wine and that that comes from contemplating a work of art?
