MATHIAS MANSIS "PASSION AS A LEGACY"
Where does this passion for wine come from?
Mathias Mansis: It is a passion that comes to me from my paternal family, a family in which we have been winegrowers for several generations. Wine has always been part of my life, so it was only natural that this passion grew.
– What made you want to create this cellar?
Mathias Mansis: Originally I studied in a wine school to go into the world of wine, not finding work in this way I went into car sales. But the idea of one day opening a vault has never left me. When the time was right for me I took the opportunity to take over a restaurant in the village, I made a lot of changes to it to transform it into a wine cellar and art gallery.
– Why in Chateauneuf du Pape?
Mathias Mansis: Chateauneuf du Pape is considered the Mecca of wines from the southern Rhône Valley with international recognition, it was obvious for me to settle in this village.
– Tell us about the wines you can find at home?
Mathias Mansis: All the wines in my cellar are wines that I have rigorously selected after tasting and which I think are a good representation of the appellation and the terroir of Chateauneuf du Pape. You will mainly find wines from the appellation of Chateauneuf du Pape 90% red and white and from the Cotes du Rhône 10%.
– Your cellar is not just a cellar, can you tell us more about its concept?
Mathias Mansis: This place that I created is not just a cellar of classic wines, the concept is to associate an artistic part with wine by exhibiting artists during the summer season.
– How do you choose the artists you exhibit?
Mathias Mansis: On this point, I work with Carole Schmitz who has a lot of contacts in the artistic world and with whom I share the same vision of art. She perfectly understood the concept that I wanted to develop and also what I liked, so she is doing her research in this direction. The idea is to mix contemporary artists and photographers. The final choice is generally linked to a human encounter. We both work on impulse and because the proposed works are in line with my concept.
– In your opinion, what are the links between art and wine?
Mathias Mansis: Wine is a passion that was born at a very young age in me, that of art came later. My paternal grandmother brought me for the first time to a vernissage when I was a teenager and I think it was a click for me, since then I have always been interested in art from near or far.
I think there is a part of aesthete for anyone who loves art and wine, these are two areas that unite and bring a part of happiness to people. A Winegrower will work his vineyard, develop his wine as a painter will work his canvas to make it a work of art, a masterpiece.
